No more single-use plastics!

Good news — we’ve been awarded Surfers Against Sewage’s Plastic Free Business Champion Award for our significant efforts in reducing single-use plastics in the restaurant!

Our Beth has worked tirelessly with Plastic Free Community Lead, Gilly Prior, for several months to identify and replace single-use plastics at the restaurant. Following a number of meetings where we’ve explored plastic-free alternatives as a team, Catch 22 is now completely free of single-use plastics — and we couldn’t be happier about it.

Plastic pollution has become a severe problem locally, nationally and globally, so fighting single-use plastics is one of the most effective ways to tackle one of the biggest environmental threats to our age. Plastic doesn’t biodegrade — it just breaks down into smaller and smaller pieces, leaching chemicals into the environment and killing wildlife. We were shocked to learn that 38.5 million plastic bottles are bought every day in the UK alone and 11 billion takeaway containers are thrown away every year! Plastic even enters the human food chain as a result, and has been found in human blood and the brain.

We’re spoilt for choice with green spaces and beaches on Anglesey, and we as a team are passionate about the community and the local environment, so it’s been very rewarding to be able to bring this knowledge to Catch 22 and make adjustments that will help our local communities thrive.

And the work doesn’t stop there — we’re already planning team beach cleans and other activities to make direct local improvements, and have even been liaising with our own suppliers to encourage them to become plastic free.

We as a team would like to say a huge ‘diolch’ to Surfers Against Sewage for their help, guidance and encouragement as we continue to learn and make further improvements to our day-to-day running of the restaurant. And if you have any sustainable ideas or suggestions, we’d love to hear from you. Our door is always open — especially when improving the local environment is involved.
